I have been reading “Guitar Lessons: A life’s journey turning passion into business” by Bob Taylor. This is one of the best business books I have read in a long time, if you follow me on Facebook, you may have noticed recently lots of quotes coming from this book. I want to expand on one idea.
Bob states that people love to hear the story of how his company started and the struggle they went through to become the business they have become. “Survival stories are self-evident and readers devour them even though they already know that the storyteller survived, because he lived to write the book. Knowing the ending doesn’t ruin the story. It’s the story itself that intrigues people.”*
I don’t know about you but I love to read biographies, especially those of people who have been extremely successful at business. One reason is that I want to learn from them; how did they do it and why? Starting a business is not easy; keeping it going is even harder. The businesses I have found to be successful have an amazing story, not only in how they started but why they were started and the obstacles they overcame to stay in business. These are often stories of the people behind the business because no great business just happens; it is the people who push it beyond what was originally imagined.
